Mimico, just west of Park Lawn Rd and Mimico Creek is the first of several cozy lakefront communities. Once the location of lakefront summer homes for Toronto's wealthiest in the 1890s, the area grew quickly with workers at the nearby railyards and became a town in 1917. The community has great waterfront parklands, mature recreational facilities and schools and a quaint shopping district and plenty of restaurants and bars.
Residents can get into Toronto in 10 minutes via Lake Shore Blvd and the Gardiner Expressway, while transit users can us the TTC bus on Royal York to connect to the Bloor-Danforth subway, take the Lake Shore Blvd bus into town, or use the GO Train stop in the community to zip to Union Station.
The community is served by 2 public elementary schools, a catholic elementary school, a public high school and a library. University of Toronto is easily accessible via the Bloor-Danforth subway, and Humber College Lakeshore Campus is accessed via the 501/508 Lake Shore Blvd bus.
Mimico residents are well served by the Mimico By The Lake shopping district on Lake Shore Boulevard and the Mimico Village district on Royal York Road, which have variety of small, locally-owned stores, restaurants, and pubs. Power shoppers head a bit north to the malls and big box stores a long The Queensway.
The community has access to the Waterfront trail along Lake Ontario, and has a first rate waterfront facility at the mouth of Mimico Creek, called Humber Bay Park, which has two yacht clubs, two boat ramps, a historic lighthouse, scenic lookouts to downtown Toronto, and a pond for model boats. The community also has two outdoor pools, an ice arena (used for winter hockey and summer lacrosse leagues), a lawn bowling club, and a tennis club with the city's only red clay courts..
Home buyers can find 1890s & 1900s Edwardian and Tudor mansions that were once the summer homes of Toronto's wealthy. There also a number of cobblestone craftsman style houses, and newly built custom-built homes in this area. More recently built homes in the community include modern bungalow designs, and low-rise rental apartment buildings. Home prices here run from the low to medium ranges.
